True Inspiration

Yesterday LS Screening had the honor of sponsoring a table at the Champions for Children fundraising event put on by Helping Hand Home for Children in Austin, TX. The Helping Hand Home for Children takes kids who have suffered the worst imaginable abuse and seeks to rehabilitate them and find them safe, loving homes. The event at the Hilton in downtown Austin was a huge success in that it brought in money and awareness for this important cause.

The highlight of the event was the inspiring talk by country singer, Jimmy Wayne. Jimmy, abandoned by his parents at age 13, wandered the streets for three years until he was taken in by an elderly couple. After cutting their lawn for a few months, this couple sensed that Jimmy was homeless (he wouldn’t admit it to them for fear they might not want him to continue to cut their grass), and invited the long-haired kid to come live with them. There were just two conditions. One, he had to cut his hair. And two, he had to go to church with them. Their rules might seem outdated and strict for some, but who can fault them for laying down a few rules after taking a kid off the streets? Not me. And not Jimmy. Turns out it’s exactly what he needed. He thrived under this strict, but loving environment, enough so that he finished high school with a perfect attendance record and then went on to graduate from college as well.

Now a certifiable country star, Jimmy is fulfilling a promise he made years ago when he “made it.” Namely, that he would speak out on behalf of neglected and abused kids.

There’s no way to communicate how inspiring it was to hear his story of neglect, abuse and abandonment, to living a life in which he’s able to do what he loves – sing and communicate his message of hope and selfless giving. Jimmy, the staff at Helping Hand Home and the foster parents who open their homes to the very neediest are truly an inspiration to us at LS Screening. And, we are grateful for the opportunities we have been given to share in assisting them in what they do.
